street in the 5000 block. investigators got there and found one person shot in the head. this man is accused of lying about his age so he could sleep with a 14-year-old. kirk yancey is a special police officer at washington hospital center. police say in august he met a girl online, posed as a 17-year- old boy. they met, had sex and afterwards he told her he was 24. yancey is really 34. police are asking anyone with a similar experience to give them a call. today members of pepco's electrical union will vote on whether or not to accept a contract proposal from the utility. if a strike does eventually happen, a pep a pepco spokeswoman assures they won't notice a thing. the power company has

contractors on standby. the labor dispute surrounds wage benefits and other issues. the leader of local 1900 says pepco can't rely only on backup contractors in the event of severe weather. >> we're the people that keep the lights on, not the management. we're the ones out in the bucket trucks and in the manholes and on the streets. >> a spokesperson for pepco says the utility doesn't want a strike but it's prepared for one. while the union is scheduled to vote on the contract today, they will hold a separate vote on whether or not they will strike. the u.s. postal service has suffered another setback. the usps is expected to miss a $5.6 billion payment to the government. they were expected to make the payment on sunday. the cash is supposed to fund health care benefits for retirees. if congress doesn't act soon, mail delivery could be drastically cut. turning our attention to the race for the white house.

both mitt romney and president obama will be in ohio today. >> both candidates plan to make stops in the cleveland and toledo areas. governor romney will also make a stop near columbus. tara mergener has more. >> reporter: by bus or by plane, for mitt romney and paul ryan, this election could come down to one state. >> oh. oh! >> ohio. >> works every time. >> reporter: ohio is one of the key swing states in this election and today romney and president obama will be battling for attention there, but the latest cbs news poll swing state shows romney with some ground to make up. the poll just out this morning has president obama up ten points in the buckeye state. he had a six-point lead before the conventions. >> we don't like it. we're not going back. >> reporter: the numbers are similar in florida where the president now has a nine-point

lead over romney and in pennsylvania he's maintained a double-digit advantage for a couple of months now. but it's ohio that's been the main focus of the campaign with president obama and his republic rival each making his 14th trip to the state. turn on a tv set in ohio and this is what you'll likely see during a commercial break. both campaigns sent more here than any other state. president obama and his allies have spent nearly $48 million on ads in the state since may 1. romney is not far behind. he and the super pack supporting him have pumped in nearly $43 million. >> how in the world can people say they want four more years of president obama? we can't afford four more years of president obama. >> reporter: romney has been trying to make the case he will do a better job with the economy but in all three states the poll shows president obama leading on that issue. >> the path i offer is harder but it leads to a better place.

events that involve the deaths of high school students. very sad here. the first will be a community walk beginning at oak creek west community park. crime solvers flyers are going to be passed out there. they're trying to find out more information about the death of amber stanley who was killed last month in her own bedroom in kettering. the other meeting is at central high school in relationship to the murder of rackel ross who was shot while walking to school. former university of university lacrosse player george huguely is appealing his murder convict. he was sentenced last month to 23 years in prison. he was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend ex-girlfriend yeardley love. there is a permanent reminder in place to remind people of those who have served our country and have not been found.

after dropping 101 points yesterday. nasdaq was down by 43 and the s&p 500 was off by 15. greece is bracing for a nationwide general strike today. it's expected to affect everything from ferries to schools and hospitals. unions are calling the strike -- rather calling the strike to protest new austerity measures that include further pension and pay cuts. protests in spain turned violent tuesday as riots blocked off abscess to the parl -- access to the parliament building in madrid. and barnes and noble says it's launching a video service this fall that will let users buy and rent movies and television shows on their tvs and mobile devices. it puts them in direct competition with other online video providers, including apple and am disonl. barnes and noble also watching new nooks with a beefed up hardware and new 9-inch tablet size. everyone has got one.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this wednesday morning. it's 4:45. howard bernstein is off this morning. olga breese is in. she has some showers in her forecast. >> that's right. we are starting off with overcast skies this morning. we saw moisture trying to move in from the west. most of the meefd yacht metro -- immediate metro area has stayed clear and calm. however, we're starting to see some of the moisture move in portions of the beltway. we've seen some showers moving off toward the west toward the bay area. for most of us, though, for today it's going to be pretty good. we'll start you off with our current conditions in and around the beltway. it's been mildover night.

we owe mild overnight. we haven't had the -- mild overnight. we haven't had the opportunity to dip down to the lower temperatures because of the cloud cover. we'll start to see some clearing and plenty of sunshine through midday. in fact, we'll have the opportunity to really warm up our temperatures later on this afternoon. here's the showers that are starting to move on through for the radar. i'll put this in motion. we saw the moisture whisk across the top of the beltway. still a little bit of wet pavement and conditions north of town but most of that will skim our area for the morning hour. things will be different, though, on your drive time home. here's how we look with our futurecast, our forecast model. it predicts one scenario of how things could play out over the next 24 to 48 hours. i'll get it going from about the 5:00 a.m. hour. notice the cloud cover stays with us most of the day. early afternoon around about your lunch break time, we'll see a little bit of that partial clearing. that's what's going to add to that daytime heating and really

get our temperatures up into the lower 80s. then into the afternoon we'll build in some more cloud cover. just a pop of moisture starting to move on through but again the afternoon rain chances are really not that healthy for us but it's still quite a bit of a possibility and we're going to continue with this sort of scenario over the next couple of daitz. here's your forecast -- days. here's your forecast in a nutshell. highs about 83, 84 degrees for reagan national airport. slightly warmer temperatures down to the south and winds today mainly out of the southwest at 5 to 15 miles per hour. then overnight tonight, another mild one with overcast skies. we'll see temperatures stick to the 60s. the next to days or three days i should say will be code green. that means we won't have any significant severe weather opportunities. however, we'll be a little moist in the evening as we go through the next couple. temperatures behind the next system really start to cool down. back into the 70s for the weekend. we will have overcast skies so we're not going to see too much of the sunshine again until monday. >> thank you so much, olga.

good morning, everybody. you have some wet conditions, at least i did until i got toward d.c. and then the roads were relatively dry about an hour ago. if you're planning to head in on 270 right now, things are very light out of frederick. down toward clarksburg and germantown to the point where the lanes divide, you should be just fine this morning. let's take a live look first at the american legion bridge on the west side of town, our mdot camera. things are looking good on the west side of town. some wet road conditions here but volumes are light across the river. you're fine between tysons and bethesda and the north top stretch of town through georgia avenue where there had been some construction. over to our chart camera now. if you're planning to head in on 95, no issues at route 216 as you head between baltimore and our beltway. things are fine on this stretch as well. back over to the maps. no problems to report if you're traveling in from virginia on the northbound side of i-95. things are fine from dumfries as you head towards woodbridge

and springfield. a live look one more time outside. this time in springfield. both the main and hov lanes are running smoothly. more traffic at 4:55. but first, a new prescreening check point at dulles airport could get you through security faster next time you fly. agents will scan the boarding pass of flyers looking to use the new check point. travelers can move through security while still wearing jackets and shoes. flyers may not have to pull out their liquids or laptops. dulles is the first airport in the country to use this risk- based check point. >> thank you, monika. the u.s. military could be fighting a new battle. the bulge. a new report says it's getting harder to find eligible recruits who meet the physical standards of the u.s. armed forces. >> in fact, the problem is so serious, commanders of all the ranks describe it as a potential threat to national security. tara mergener has more. >> reporter: the american obesity especial dependic has hit the front lines -- epidemic has hit the front lines.

25 % of young americans are too fat to fight. >> even if they wanted to serve in the u.s. military services, they will not be able to do that because they're disqualified on the basis of obesity. >> reporter: the group made up of more than a hundred retired generals and admirals warned of the problem to years ago and says the problem hasn't improved n. a new report titled "still too fat to fight" and they want to start with kids. >> getting junk food out of our schools is critically important to making sure america's childhood obesity crisis does not become a more serious national security crisis. >> reporter: the writers of the report want to see more cafeterias like the one at this school in washington, d.c. where school officials have tossed out vending machines in favor of healthier foods. military leaders say the problem is reversible if healthier food choices are combined with more physical fitness in schools. >> definitely want to see as students become more fit and

eat healthier that they'll be able to stay lean near their childhood as then as they move into adulthood. >> reporter: the report says hundreds of recruits are annually discharged from the military because they are too heavy. training those unfit recruits and finding their replacements costs taxpayers an extra $60 million every year. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. >> recruits can get a special waiver for being overweight but they must attend a military weight loss program before basic training. these recruits often gain back the weight and are discharged. childhood obesity may have a greater impact on future health than first thought. researchers at the university of ox forward looked at nearly 50,000 children and found obese kids have significantly higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels. doctors also detected thickening in the heart muscle, a risk factor for heart disease. scientists say these children could be at a 30% higher risk of future stroke and heart disease if they do not lose the

weight. researchers at the university of wisconsin may have a reason why children living in urban areas are the higher risk of developing asthma. testing on nearly 800 infants show inner city kids are much more likely than suburban children to be exposed to a type of viral respiratory infection during their childhood which could cause chronic lung infections. doctors believe those infections can change the way their lungs develop putting them at high risk for asthma. but more study is needed to confirm the findings. a british study says doctors should trust their gut. researchers found a physician's intuition can sometimes be more accurate than symptoms. scientists tracked pediatricians who scheduled follow-up tests for patients even though examinations showed nothing wrong. in a handful of cases, the children ended up having a serious infection. the doctors in those cases all said they followed a feeling that something was wrong. it is 4:52. time for the question of the
